Hello everyone exploring the world of Observability! Today, I’d like to talk about a very flexible and powerful feature of the OTLP receiver within the OpenTelemetry Collector, a core component of the OpenTelemetry (OTel) ecosystem.
Many of you might have wondered, ‘Should I use gRPC or HTTP?’ when sending data. The answer is: “Both are possible!” How is that possible? π€

π OTLP Receiver: Opening Two Doors Simultaneously
The OTLP receiver of the OpenTelemetry Collector boasts magical flexibility. The core of it is the ability to configure and operate gRPC and HTTP endpoints simultaneously.
Why is this important?
Your system environment can be very diverse.
- Modern microservices might use gRPC for high-performance communication. βοΈ
- Existing web applications or specific environments might find HTTP more convenient. π
If the OTLP receiver only supported one protocol, you would face the hassle of setting up separate Collectors for clients using different protocols. π«
But! The OpenTelemetry Collector solves all of this at once.
As shown in the image above, the OTLP receiver opens two doors (gRPC port, HTTP port) wide, welcoming and accepting data regardless of the protocol it arrives with.
β OTLP/gRPC Client: “Hello! Data has arrived!” β‘οΈ Collector received! β OTLP/HTTP Client: “I brought data too!” β‘οΈ Collector received!
Thanks to this, we can maintain a much simpler infrastructure configuration while building a powerful pipeline that can smoothly collect data from clients in various environments.
πΊοΈ All Kinds of Data, All at Once!
This flexibility isn’t limited to protocols. The OTLP receiver can process all types of Telemetry data coming in via gRPC and HTTP.
- Traces πΊοΈ: Track the flow of requests in distributed systems.
- Metrics π: Numerical data representing system performance and status.
- Logs π: Text records of events.
Regardless of the protocol used, it collects all this important data without missing anything, allowing you to perfectly observe your system.
β¨ Conclusion: Flexibility is Key!
The fact that OpenTelemetry Collector’s OTLP receiver simultaneously supports gRPC and HTTP is not just a simple feature addition. It is a key advantage that significantly reduces the complexity of data collection in modern IT infrastructures where diverse technology stacks and environments coexist. π‘
This flexibility, which allows a single Collector to accommodate clients using multiple protocols, is one of the reasons OpenTelemetry is so powerful.
I hope this information helps you on your observability journey! π
